Our Denomination

Originating on the American frontier in the early 1800s, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a mainline Protestant denomination. The church's founders sought to create an open communion where all are welcome. Today nearly 3,800 congregations share these characteristics:

  • Each congregation is self-governing and calls its own pastor
  • Worship services may be formal or informal, and include lay women and men in leadership
  • Communion, which is open to all, is celebrated each week
  • Open discussion of issues and diversity of opinion are encouraged
  • Congregations welcome racial and ethnic diversity
